Containment: When Ambition Defies Reality

Book Pre-Launch

Over the last few months I’ve shared with you lessons about leadership, organizational behavior, and psychology that have informed my work and have hopefully benefited you.

When I reflected back over the last 30 years transforming organizations and leaders, I found a common thread that connected those who could achieve the impossible and separated them from those who only tried. And I decided to write a book about it.

It's called Containment: When Ambition Defies Reality

And I’m excited to share that the pre-launch is now open.

I want to take a moment to tell you what the book actually argues, because I think it matters now more than ever.

Most leadership writing treats ambition as a matter of vision, courage, and execution. What it largely misses is that ambitious work, the kind that asks an organization or a country to become something it isn't yet, generates anxiety.

Real, collective, system-wide anxiety, present in every meeting, every restructure, every impossible goal set before the system is ready to deliver it.

We know we’re doing something that’s never done before when we feel a jolt of excitement, a mixture of fear and anticipation.

That anxiety has to go somewhere. And what most leaders do with it (usually control it, deny it, or push it downward), is precisely what causes ambitious efforts to fail.

I saw this first-hand in my 20-years at the center of Dubai Government, witnessing a city transform itself from a fishing port to a leading global economic, trade, and tourism hub.

I discovered that the leaders who deliver on impossible goals are the ones who can contain anxiety. Not control it. Not absorb it silently.

Containing anxiety means to hold it in a way that lets the system keep working, keep thinking, keep moving forward without collapsing under the weight of what's being asked.

The book is built around four nested layers of containment: inner, relational, systemic, and symbolic. It draws on the psychodynamic tradition alongside systems thinking and twenty years of working at the center of Dubai's government transformation.

All of what's in the book has been pressure-tested in rooms where the goals were genuinely larger than the systems built to deliver them.

I'm in pre-launch now, and there are a few ways to come on board.

WAYS TO COME ON BOARD

01 Pre-order the book. Support the launch before it goes wide

02 Join a reading circle where a small group will work through the material together as the launch unfolds

03 Work with me directly through coaching

04 Bring the framework into your organization through an offsite or leadership engagement

Each path supports the launch in a different way, and the early supporters are the ones who shape how far the book travels.

Thank you for staying with me through the writing of this. I hope what's in these pages is worth the wait.

6 April 2026 From the Coach's Desk Something unusual is happening in the UAE right now. A country absorbing sustained military attacks is functioning with remarkable stability. Residents feel safe and daily life continues with minimal disruption. Most people living outside the UAE find this surprising. It isn't, if you understand containment. Containment is the leadership capacity to absorb collective fear so that a system can keep thinking and functioning. It's what I observed across 20...

8 December 2025 From the Coach's Desk One of the fundamental beliefs that I carry with me in every leadership coaching session is that awareness brings change. When my clients experience and integrate a new insight about how they are showing up, and about how they are limiting themselves, the rest becomes easy. As we come towards the end of the year and start to look forward to 2026, I want to bring a little of that self-awareness to all of you. If you'd like to take control of 2026, I'm...

8 September 2025 From the Coach's Desk Einstein famously said: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." In teams and organizations that often translates to a simple truth: if you see yourself as part of the system you're trying to fix, you become to entangled with it emotionally to be an effective problem solver. What sets great leaders apart is their ability to look at the system as an object that can be redesigned according to their needs, rather...
